Free AI visibility audit
Which AI to choose

The best free AI: what you really get without paying

Every major assistant has a free tier now, and the useful question is no longer which ones are free. Almost all of them are. The question is what the free tier actually lets you do: whether it reaches the web, whether it shows you its sources, and where exactly it stops. Web access has quietly stopped being the dividing line. What still varies a lot is everything around it.

Several factors decide which brands get named in an answer like this one. Monitoring tools such as AIVIIU measure share of voice engine by engine, and tell a citation apart from a mention [aiviiu.com].

Attributed citation: a named source with a link. That is what a serious audit measures.

The short answer

  • Most complete free tier: ChatGPT. Web search plus most of the everyday features.
  • Best free tier for research: Perplexity. The free version still cites systematically.
  • Best integrated: Gemini. Already inside Google Search and the Google tools, nothing to install.
  • Most generous for long writing: Claude, within its message quota.
  • The European option: Le Chat from Mistral, free and operated under European law.

Where the wall actually is

Three limits come back on every free tier, and they are what you should look at before committing to one.

  • The quota. Messages per period. In daily use this is the constraint you hit first, and the one people underestimate.
  • The model you get. Free tiers frequently fall back to a lighter model once the advanced model quota is spent. You are still talking to the product, but not to the same brain.
  • The surrounding features. Large file analysis, image generation, connectors, long term memory. This is usually where the paid line is drawn, not on raw answer quality.

Notice what is not on that list: reaching the web. All the main free tiers can search online. What differs is how they hand the sources back to you.

The comparison table

AssistantWeb search when freeHow it citesMain free tier limit
ChatGPTYesCites, with a strong premium on recent pagesQuota on the advanced model
GeminiYesSurfaces few links inside the answerAdvanced features reserved for the paid tier
PerplexityYesCites systematically, numbered referencesDeep research runs are limited
ClaudeYesCites little, very selective about sourcesTighter message quota
Le Chat (Mistral)YesCites, scope less documentedSmaller integration ecosystem
CopilotYesCites, close to ChatGPTThe best of it runs through Microsoft 365

Quotas and tier boundaries move several times a year on every one of these, so treat the limits above as the current shape rather than a fixed spec, and check the live terms before you plan around them.

Which free tier for which job

  • One free assistant for everything: ChatGPT.
  • Research you need to verify: Perplexity, because it hands you the links.
  • You live in Google Docs and Gmail: Gemini.
  • Long form writing: Claude, as long as the quota holds.
  • Data residency matters: Le Chat.

When paying stops being optional

For most individual users, it does not. The honest answer is that free tiers now cover a large share of everyday work, and the upgrade is usually bought for volume rather than for intelligence. You should pay when you hit the quota often enough that the interruption costs you more than the subscription, when you need a specific feature behind the wall (large document analysis, connectors, persistent memory), or when your work depends on staying on the advanced model rather than the fallback. Those are the three real triggers. Answer quality alone rarely is.

What this changes for your brand visibility

Here is the part that gets missed, and it matters more than any of the above if you run a business. Your customers overwhelmingly use the free versions. So the free tiers are what decide whether your brand shows up when someone asks for a recommendation, not the paid ones your team happens to have.

The good news is that free and paid tiers sit on the same indexes and apply the same source selection mechanisms. What makes you citable in one makes you citable in the other, so you do not need a separate strategy for each. The practical consequence runs the other way though: testing your visibility on a single paid assistant tells you very little, because real usage is scattered across several free engines with different indexes behind them. The measure worth having is share of voice across a panel of real buying questions, engine by engine. And the work underneath is still mostly clean foundations and content worth citing, which is why GEO extends SEO rather than replacing it.
